Join RCOE Arts Administrator, Louisa Higgins, as she explains the competencies of social and emotional learning, as well as the four artistic processes. Participants will then do a hands-on art making lesson, as well as explore several other lesson types and strategies to prepare them to incorporate the arts and SEL into their teaching in the fall. Louisa Higgins is the Arts Administrator for Riverside County Office of Education. She has fourteen years of experience as an elementary classroom teacher, and another fourteen years as an arts educator and administrator. This session will provide K-12 educators with a research-based framework and high-leverage practices for optimizing distance learning experiences for K-12 students. Examples and resources for further learning will be shared.

Presenter: Maria Simani, CA Science Project
Dr. Maria Simani is the executive director of the California Science Project, a statewide network providing professional development in science for K–12 teachers. Dr. Simani received her PhD in experimental particle physics in the Netherlands, then conducted particle physics research at DESY in Germany, at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, and at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Since 2012, she has served on the California Department of Education’s Science Expert Committee to review and provide recommendations for the adoption of the Next Generation Science Standards. Dr. Simani and the California Science Project have also contributed as lead writers of the new California Science Curriculum Framework.

As teachers, we are expected and want to be able to respond appropriately to our students’ social and emotional needs when they attend our classes. We are also expected and want to be able to provide further support, structure and guidance when a student is in crisis or need. But how do we meet these expectations when we ourselves are facing something with which we only have complicated and limited information and experience? In our current public health crisis we face new challenges, fears and the unknown, yet, we have the tools to respond to these challenges in healthy and productive ways. Join Tiffany Randall and Erin Boehme in a thought provoking conversation about the social/emotional needs of students and what to put in our teacher’s tool box to be ready to reconnect with students in person or online as a supportive and informed adult in their lives.

Erin Boehme has 22 years experience in working with children and families in human development and community building. She has built her experience through her studies in Italy with the Reggio schools, through formal child development education in the US, as a public project coordinator for the Kidspace Museum in Pasadena, as a lead instructor at Santa Barbara City College Early Childhood lab school, working with public school students in nature, with more than 20 years as a classroom teacher, a director of Wild Roots Forest School and through volunteer work with Wilderness Youth Project and the CASA program of Eastern Sierra. Erin is passionate about supporting and building a healthy community through teacher support, education, the arts and nature.

Tiffany has worked with TK-12 students and teachers for over 15 years. Her expertise has focused on Trauma Informed Practices as well as the social-emotional needs of our English-learners and students from poverty.
