8th Grade
College Day
College Day Spring 2024
Approximately 169 8th grade students visited Cerro Coso Community College on Friday, February 9th, to learn about the transition to high school, preparing for post secondary education, and a variety of local career opportunities. Students rotated through sessions to introduce topics about finances, A-G requirements, opportunities with Cerro Coso, and the impacts of everyday choices.
8th grade students also had the opportunity to visit Reno in the fall of 2023 to tour Truckee Meadows Community College and the University of Nevada, Reno. Students were asked to recall these experiences to comment on any assistance that was provided for future planning and share goals for their future:
“These trips were helpful to me because I got to learn classes I should take in high school and the community college.”
“They were very helpful for now and my future so I can know what college to go to and to think about life.”
“I feel like it definitely gives me more encouragement to go to college”
“I understood that I do have opportunities for my desired profession.”
“The goals that I have are to stay focused, have fun, save money, and get good grades.”
“I wanna get good grades in middle school and high school and for career opportunities I want to go to college”
“The goals I have for my education is to succeed”
This opportunity was made possible by the Inyo County Office of Education in partnership with Cerro Coso Community College and with support from Bishop, Big Pine, Owens Valley, and Lone Pine schools. ICOE extends sincere gratitude to all of the teachers, bus drivers, and community volunteers who enthusiastically supported this event and provided encouragement to our youth.

College Day 2022
Thanks to all who joined 8th Grade College Day on September 9, 2022! Approximately 200 8th grade students from Inyo County visited Cerro Coso Community College to learn about College and Careers. Students rotated through 7 different sessions for an introduction to A-G requirements, financial aspects of post-secondary education, CSU and University requirements, spoke with a local graduates panel, and did a little planning for their future. After the event, students shared about their goals:
"My goal for 8th grade is to only get B's and A's but mostly A's. My goal for high school is to complete the A-G requirements and to play at least one sport each year. Senior year I want to play all the sports and only get A's and B's."
"My goals are to have a good education and have a good career."
“I want to go to college and get popular for basketball and then go to the NBA but if that doesn't work I want a good paying job."
"To get a masters degree and I'm going to work for that."
We look forward to seeing everyone again next year!
