An educator for 32 years, Laura currently leads the Multimedia Services unit at the Los Angeles County Office of Education. She has been a coordinator and mentor, designing and implementing staff development in the use of effective instructional strategies and appropriate digital tools to enhance instruction and support learning. As a classroom teacher of 17 years, she incorporated multimedia as an instructional tool and engaged students with interdisciplinary projects to increase student learning.

The Arts: Social and Emotional Learning

Join RCOE Arts Administrator, Louisa Higgins, as she explains the competencies of social and emotional learning, as well as the four artistic processes. Participants will then do a hands-on art making lesson, as well as explore several other lesson types and strategies to prepare them to incorporate the arts and SEL into their teaching in the fall. Please join us for this informative session that is distance learning friendly and focused on elementary education and easily adaptable to all grades.

Louisa Higgins is the Arts Administrator for Riverside County Office of Education. She has fourteen years of experience as an elementary classroom teacher, and another fourteen years as an arts educator and administrator. She is a practicing artist, poet, and a passionate advocate for the need for arts access for everyone.

This session will provide K-12 educators with a research-based framework and high-leverage practices for optimizing distance learning experiences for K-12 students. Examples and resources for further learning will be shared.

Presenter: Maria Simani, CA Science Project
Dr. Maria Simani is the executive director of the California Science Project, a statewide network providing professional development in science for K–12 teachers. Dr. Simani received her PhD in experimental particle physics in the Netherlands, then conducted particle physics research at DESY in Germany, at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, and at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Since 2012, she has served on the California Department of Education’s Science Expert Committee to review and provide recommendations for the adoption of the Next Generation Science Standards. Dr. Simani and the California Science Project have also contributed as lead writers of the new California Science Curriculum Framework.
